Crowd funding: Co-creating a handmade knife

February 16th, 2009 · 2 Comments

iamoneworld is partly a crowd funded project, so I was pleasantly surprised when Theo van Leeuwen told me he wanted to contribute a handmade knife to the project! Theo is a knifemaker (check: www.hot-shot.nl) and for this special project he works together with another renowned knifemaker, Gert van den Elsen. Together they design and make this cooperative knife in the Woodlore tradition. They are working on the blade right now:

The blade is made out of ATS 34 steel tempered on 60 Rockwell. Wood: stabilized Elm Burl.

Woodlore is a bushcraft survival school founded by expert Ray Mears.
A couple of years ago I followed the Fundamental Bushcraft course at Woodlore, in England. I was sold. Making shelters and natural cordage, learning about plants for food, fire by friction and preparing rabbit :) One week of ancient outdoor knowledge and there is so much more to discover and learn…

The gear on this trip is very important. Mostly it has to be lightweight, versatile, practical and very sturdy. I know a good knife is one of the most important parts of your equipment, so this definitely is an offer I can’t refuse! Thanks guys :)

This seems like a really interesting project. A site that might be helpful is IndieGoGo.com. It’s a crowdfunding website that has been really successful in mobilizing interest in the past.

      Hi Daniel,

IndieGoGo looks really interesting too! I hadn´t heard of it before. Thank you.
